“What’s Ahead?” was the piece that the minimalist master of Taiwan, Richard Lin’s grand prize winner of the first “Contemporary Sculpture Exhibition in the Republic of China” in 1985. It has been thirty years since then, today the first FORMOSA Sculpture Biennial borrowed the title of the winning piece, and invited over thirty seasoned and experienced Taiwan contemporary sculptors to restart the platform of sharing creativity, thinking and ideas. At the same time, it is also a great opportunity to check the trends and focuses of contemporary sculptures of Taiwan, and the thoughts and views of the real world.
As the development of Taiwan contemporary art, sculpture itself has broken the conventional format and expanded its territory. The contemporary sculpture entering the new century is no longer an art category that is bound for its closed territory. However, many diverse experiments of different forms are ongoing today, but “the expansion of the sculpture territory” is no longer a revolutionary change, but a concept that is deeply rooted in the contemporary art contexts. The main focus of today’s sculpture that dealing in the time of “post-expansion” era is not the breakthrough of the formal boundary of the medium, but to search the possibilities for communicating and responding the complex experiences of the new era.
This exhibition focuses on three main issues as aspects of exploration: “Natural Interpretation, Environmental Variation”, “Contemporary Shapes, Different Notes and Complex Tunes”, and “Daily Viewing, Ordinary Object Stories”. Through the plural implied meanings, different expressions and representations, capturing new sensations and new meanings of the era and showing the contemporary characters of new century Taiwanese sculpture realizations.
