Scale is the way we understand the world, and the basis we define ourselves. We always use known or existing standard measurements to measure the present moment or even imagine the unknown. However, we live in an environment that constantly changes, and over and over again shocked by “super” events or objects, where parameters or scale of measurement have continued to be rewritten and redefined. The symbolic nature and metaphorical function of scale in sculpture can examine and respond to this “era characterized by changes in scale.” “Incommensurable?” attempts to focus on the themes of scale related to sculpture — weight, substantiality, and size which underline the real world exploration of diversity, and disorder of scale.
This exhibition adopts the topic of measurement as the narrative framework, invited over 20 artists; their works expands to cover the contrast, contradiction, and discussions between heavy and weightlessness, virtuality and concreteness, maximum and minimum that related to scale.
All the dialectics in scale, not only showcase material challenge, regulatory breakthrough, and surprising or impactful power, but also attempt to evoke perception, stimulate imagination, and ponder on the complicated phenomenon and condition beyond the visual observation or rational logics.
