Steel is an essential material for the construction of modern buildings, large engineering projects, and machinery. The various types of steel that undergo the normalizing process, such as the C-beam, I-beam, H-beam, and angle bars, economize material costs without weakening the steel, which standardized specifications and easily constructible steel provides the greatest advantages in terms of both structural performance and economic benefit. Among the numerous kinds of steel, the C-beam in particular has local significance as it is used in the construction of steel shacks in Taiwan. For the title of the 8th Kaohsiung International Steel and Iron Art Festival 2016, “Steel Play,” the “C” in C-beams is replaced with “xi” (the Chinese word for play) to transform the meaning of utilitarianism and instrumental functions that the C-beam usually symbolizes and explore the “purposelessness” of “play” in art. The works of participating artists, who have been invited from the U.S., China, Japan, Indonesia, and Taiwan, include interactive art pieces that appeal to a sense of play, inspire exploration, and invoke curious sensory perceptions. The kinetic sculptures in particular use wind power or kinetic energy to create a domain of unique sensory experience.
