空間的探索，向來是科學、是物理，也是哲學、是思想，甚或是虛實交雜的詩意想像。聚焦於此的2017 FORMOSA雕塑雙年展，轉借來自科學領域的「M理論」（M-theory），以「M 空間」作為展題。
挑戰空間思維定式的「M理論」 ，將「多維空間」推展至「十一維空間」的論辯，從「唯一宇宙」（uni-verse）轉進「多重宇宙」（multi-verse）的思考。本展引伸此概念，類比探討現實中不斷流變的多重空間、異質並存的種種平行世界，回應紛繁複雜的當代空間經驗。命題中的「M」，涵蓋不同意義，包括延展各種維度所在的「膜/membrane」、母體/matrix，或魔法般的/magic、神秘的/mystery。除此之外，本展特別也意欲指向雕塑的「物質空間∕material space」、「變態空間∕metamorphic space」，以及相對的「形而上的∕metaphysical」蘊義，以演繹既仰賴又超越物理，既作為載體、材料、也成為語境或文本，而充滿辯證的雕塑空間 。
終究而言，「M空間」，也或可謂是重新「創造空間」（making space）。為此邀請的十五位國內外藝術家們，將構築想像的異境維度、打開現實的平行宇宙，引我們在「空間跳躍」中，開展多向而複義的探索。

Space exploration has always been a science, physics, as well as philosophy, ideology, or even a poetic imagination. Focusing on these mentioned above, 2017 FORMOSA Sculpture Biennale uses “M Space” as the main theme, borrowing “M-theory” from the field of science.
“M-theory” challenges established modes of spatial thinking ; a debate that extends the multiple dimensions of space-time into an 11 spacetime universe as well as an idea that transforms uni-verse into multi-verse. The exhibition extends this concept, making an analogical exploration of the multi-verse in reality, which is constantly changing, and of a variety of parallel universes, where many different types of things or people co-exist, in response to the wide spectrum of modern spatial experiences. The “M” in the proposition stands for a wide variety of meaning, such as membrane, matrix, magic, and mystery, extending into every dimension. Besides, the exhibition also attempts at the connotations of the “material” space, the “metamorphic” one along with the “metaphysical” one, interpreting the sculpture space, which depends on but goes far beyond physics; which is both the carrier and the material. Be it the context or the text, the space is full of dialectic reasoning.
After all, “M space” is, one may well say, making space again. We invite 15 artists, at home and abroad, to construct an imaginary dimension of wonderland and opened up the doors to the parallel Universes of reality, embarking on a journey of exploration into a multifaceted, complex territory.
