栁美和 Miwa Yanagi

1967 年生於日本神戶,

2009年成為第53屆威尼斯雙年展日本館的代表藝術家。

2021年挑戰新創歌仔戲,臺日合製《阿婆蘭》。

畢業於京都市立藝術大學研究所,藝術創作橫跨影像、裝置與戲劇。以探討女性為主題的攝影作品聞名。作品勇於嘗試結合當代以及傳統藝術的極端碰撞。

 

創作理念

礦脈與氣根

古代製鐵的過程需要熟練地掌握水、土、木、火、金等五行元素,這正是借助五行相生的原理。透過泥爐冶煉所產生的固化鐵,以及從熔爐溢出的金屬流動,讓人感受到彷彿置身遠古時代的美麗熔岩大地之中。

當我接觸到鐵的五種元素結晶體後,激盪出一股創作衝動,想刻意地打造一個感受不到礦物重量、以及不受鐵的悠久歷史與故事影響的有質感有溫度的作品。於是,我開始嘗試製作輕盈得能隨風飄動,又能在空間中自由移動、組裝的雕塑作品;並特意清除了變形和生鏽這些歲月痕跡,打造出截然不同的感官體驗。

 

About the Artist

1967 – Born in Kobe City.

2009 – Represented Japan at the 53rd Venice Biennale with the installation Windswept Women: The Old Girls’ Troupe.

2021 – Participated in the Taiwan-Japan co-produced Taiwanese opera Aphrodite.

A postgraduate of the Kyoto City University of Arts, Miwa Yanagi boasts a creative catalogue that spans photography, installation art, and theater. She is most well-known for her women-centric photographic works, and her art unabashedly showcases the electrifying results that occur when contemporary and traditional art collide.

 

Artist's Statement

Mineral Veins and Aerial Roots

In the ancient iron-making process, the five elements of water, earth, wood, fire, and gold must be skillfully mastered, and this is based precisely on the principle of five-element compatibility. Through the iron smelted and hardened in the mud furnace and the flow of metal overflowing from the furnace, we can feel the beauty of the ancient earth like lava.

After being exposed to the five-element crystalline body of iron, I was inspired to create a work that dares to be free of the mineral's heaviness, but also of iron's long history and stories, with a sense of free texture and heat. I attempt to create sculptures that are light enough to flutter in the wind and can be freely moved and assembled within a space, intentionally removing deformation, rust, and other changes over time to create a completely different sensory experience.
