Philip King

About the Artist

Phillip King is a British Sculptor. A leading figure among the 60’s New Generation, also an important figure in British modern sculpture. In 1969, he was invited to Osaka for the World Fair, and started to work with steel. His works are characterized with minimalist style, developing his personal form-color aesthetics by applying simplified geometric forms and colors. In 2010, he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement award from the International Sculpture Center, and received an Honorary Doctorate from Cambridge University in 2012.

Artist's Statement

Mountains of scrap are very enticing though it was years ago that I used scrap. I was worried that once having chosen my scrap, and however wonderful these bits and pieces might appear, I would not be able to communicate what I wanted to do to turn them into my kind of sculpture. Because of the materials here are mostly heavy steel plates, demanding special equipment and handling. I decided to concentrate on making works that could be made according to specific instruction and would have very little manual input by myself.A bonus for me was Po-Chun Liu’s participation with me as a resident artist. It became easier to explain what I wanted for my work, and the excitement of watching his developing ideas was a great stimulus.
